Congress wrap-up
Around 200 researchers from Portugal, Spain, Brazil, Canada, the USA, France, Italy, Sweeden and the UK, were gathered in Lisbon, on May 7-10, 2016 for the first Lusophone Congress on Western Esotericism, by Universidade Lusófona de Humanidades e Tecnologias. The organization was held the by Western Esotericism line of research of the area of Religious Studies of Universidade Lusófona.
The congress delivered 80 presentations in Portuguese, Spanish and English, presented in 13 thematic symposiums. The great majority of the symposiums were around themes such as Gnosis and Hermeticism (both Ancient and Renaissance), as well as Theosophy and modern cultural movements. Throughout the whole event there were presentations of remarkable quality. A special highlight has to be given to the thematic symposiums of Art and Western Esotericism due to its quality and to the one dedicated to the Jungian studies, not only due to its quality as well but also due to its foundational aspect in such a field in Portugal. Prof. Peter Forshaw
Due to a force majeure situation, Prof. Wouter Hanegraaff was forced to cancel his participation in the Congress. In his place, and representing Center for History of Hermetic Philosophy and Related Currents, Prof. Peter Forshaw will assume the two talks previously planned to be thrown by Prof. Hanegraaff. Prof. Peter Forshaw is a key figure in the academic hermetic studies.

Extended deadline for paper proposals
The deadline for the submition of paper proposals was extended to March 12. All proposals must be sent to the email address congresso.esoterismo@ulusofona.pt and ought fit in one of the thematic symposiums.

Prof. Wouter Hanegraaff presence confirmed
We’re pleased to announce that prof. Wouter Hanegraaff will be one of the main speakers of the Lusophone Congress on Western Esotericism. His presence is more than welcomed as he’s a key figure in the academic studies of Western Esotericism. Among other collaborations, we’re highlighting his presentation in the Library of the Palácio Nacional de Mafra (National Palace of Mafra).

1st Lusophone Congress on Western Esotericism
Organized by the department of Religious Studies of Universidade Lusófona, will take place in Lisbon, on May 7-10, 2016. The event will gather researchers from lusophone countries, as well as from other departments from non-Portuguese speaking universities.
This important international scientific event is a joint-venture from post-graduation programs of several Brazilian, Portuguese and Spanish universities. The two main outcomes of this congress, regarding Portuguese speaking countries, are to a) establish the foundations of a scientific field on Western Esotericism and b) create an academic network for researchers in this field.
Researchers can apply their papers to the several thematic symposiums happening during the event. All papers accepted to the thematic symposiums will be published.
Besides the symposiums, the congress will also present discussion sessions, talks and presentations. There will also be thematic visits to several sites regarding Esotericism, in Lisbon and its surroundings.
